Do you own the content you broadcast LIVE?

Content creators should always be aware of who owns the content they create. It’s not as straight forward a question as it may seem. That’s because you need to be thinking not just about ownership, but also CONTROL of your content. Just because you own something doesn’t mean you control the way it’s used.

Listen to the audio version:

While you do own what you have created on a platform like Facebook, the service has full control over how it’s used and displayed. They can run ads to your content, promote it, bury it, or take it down entirely.

If you save your show as a recording you can post it on your own site, with separate hosting, which gives you much more control over availability down the road. People may not always be able to find your shows months or years later on an outside platform, but they can if you repurpose to your own site. That’s what we call “the afterlive”. Repurposing is possible when shooting from a phone but it becomes much easier (with better results) at Level 3 and Level 4 live streaming.
